At Little Orchard Nursery, we recognise that food and nutrition play a vital role in supporting children’s health, wellbeing and development, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Mealtimes are an important part of the daily routine, promoting children’s personal, social and emotional development while encouraging independence and self-care skills.
Our approach supports children to develop a positive relationship with food by offering balanced, nutritious meals and creating a calm, sociable environment where children can enjoy eating together. Our menus are inspired by Annabel Karmel, the UK’s number one children’s cookery author, ensuring meals are both nutritious and appealing to young children. In line with Ofsted expectations, we promote healthy lifestyles and help children understand the importance of making healthy choices.
Children are actively involved in their food journey — from growing vegetables in our garden to taking part in simple food preparation and cooking activities. These experiences support key areas of learning, including communication and language, physical development and understanding the world.
Through self-serving mealtimes and hands-on experiences, children are encouraged to make choices, develop independence and build confidence. Our aim is to support every child in developing healthy habits for life, ensuring they feel safe, included and well cared for in a nurturing environment.
